Incubus and Linkin Park, two of alternative rocks biggest acts are rocking across the country on the 2012 Honda Civic Tour along with opening act Mutemath. The tour started August 10th in Virginia, and will end September 10th in the co-headlining bands’ home state of California.
The not-quite from Los Angeles-based bands are from the neighboring cities of Calabasas (Incubus) and Agoura Hills (Linkin Park), and come from the same generation of alternative music to come out of the hilly area. But the similarities don’t end there. Both groups incorporate the same mix of electronic, rap rock, and alternative rock to their music.

The albums Make Yourself (1999) and Morning View (2001) gained the band mainstream success and recognition, but it’s their earlier work that often gets overlooked. Incubus’s unique sound that blends funky turntables, hard guitar rock, and occasional rap flows is what brought the band a large fan following. The album that best exemplify these eclectic qualities is their second and most underrated album S.C.I.E.N.C.E. released in 1997. The band has since evolved to a more alternative rock sound with funky jazz sounds sprinkled in.
I am not complaining about the direction the band has taken since their Make Yourself album, but I have noticed a trend of similar sounding songs. Listen to the song “Stellar” from the Make Yourself album and “Oil and Water” from the 2006 Light Grenades album. Both start with a slowly building guitar riff that transition into hard rock explosion of heavy drums and vocals.
Light Grenades happened to be the bands most successful album, which received both commercial success and critical praise for its self-contained diverse sound. It also another peg in the band’s evolution from funk metal to a distinct, yet unclassifiable alternative sound.
The band had a short hiatus after the Light Grenades album, as each member concentrated on individual projects and/or responsibilities. Some members like guitarist Mike Einzinger and turntablist Chris Kilmore worked on expanding their musical styles. Even in hiatus, the band couldn’t stop from making music. A greatest hits album Monuments and Melodies was released which included new songs from the band.
The band returned to the studio and released their seventh studio album If Not Now, When? last summer. The album is notable for the band’s slower and simpler sound, away from the more aggressive sound fans have come to know. Turntablist Kilmore’s piano playing, a skill he honed during the band’s hiatus, became a major part of the album. The album gained mixed reviews for the band’s warmer groove.
Recently, the group took on an ambitious social media and fan project called Incubus HQ Live. The project allowed unprecedented fan access and interaction. The week-long experiment included music clinics, Q&A sessions, and art exhibitions by both the band and the fans. What made the experiment more incredible were the fan-created setlist live performances, which were streamed live online on various social media sites. A CD-DVD box set documenting the experiment was released last July.
The band is now co-headlining the Honda Civic Tour with fellow L.A. outlanders Linkin Park.
Incubus haven’t announced any plans for after the tour, and another hiatus is imminent.
