Taylor Swift Announces New Album, Releases New Single

When Taylor Swift announced that she had some “pretty cool news” to share with the world, my first thought was “She’s engaged!” My second thought was that she had a new album, which seemed as equally realistic as the first thought. So, just like every other Swift fan, I geared up for the August 13 live video announcement.

Not even a minute into the webcast, she announced there would be a new album slated for an October 22 release, Red.

So far, so good! A minimalist title with a minimalist album cover, something uncharacteristic for extremely girly Swift. (Plus, it was cute that she wore a red dress with red lipstick – “It’s all in the details”.) Her explanation that all the emotions she felt in her “0 to 60, hit the wall, explodes” relationships during the last two years could only be explained as ‘red’.  And as we’ve heard from the last three albums, Taylor is very in tune with her emotions and is not afraid to write about them. But alas, she did not write all of the songs herself! She mentioned that she worked with and co-wrote songs with “some of her favorite people” (one being Ed Sheeran), which will be interesting to see. She didn’t give a date for the inevitable tour, but she mentioned that planning was in the works.

Listening through her Q & A, I couldn’t help but think that there was something else she was about to announce. I was right. Her new single, which by the title alone seems like it belongs on one of her earlier, less mature albums, did not quite fit with the whole ‘minimalist’ image she portrayed earlier. Ok pause – let’s think back to her first album, categorized under country. Just the right amount of twang, but still poppy enough to survive on contemporary radio stations. Next, Fearless, which was even less of a country album, but who cares, she was big by then. Speak Now came along and it was harder to say that she was “country”, except for ‘Mean’. Now, if you forget that she ever came from country roots at all, you end up with ‘We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together’. Don’t get me wrong, I love Taylor Swift. I think she’s a fantastic role model. The only issue I see is that she’s less and less herself and more a product of a record label. Maybe I’m just nostalgic for the Swift of the past.

All that aside, I really love the new single. It’s catchy, it’s fun to sing to, it’s easily relatable to the majority of the 15-25 age demographic. I just don’t think Taylor Swift when I hear it, which makes me concerned about the rest of the 16 song album.

I’m curious, who do you think the song was written about?
