Summer Sounds: Week 5

Alex Clare // Too Close

While watching Breaking Bad a few weeks ago (which, if you know me, is the only show I actually watch on TV in real time), a commercial for the new version of Internet Explorer came on. Cue eye roll. But I enjoyed the song that accompanied it quite a bit – ‘Too Close’.

Saint Lou Lou // Maybe You

Based on this song alone, I can predict this sister duo will pull through and make it indie-big. Their soaring vocals carry the song perfectly into a dreamy state that stays with you long after the last note.

Kid Cudi // Just What IAm feat. King Chip

Kid Cudi has released a new song, and not as his side project, WZRD. Reminiscent of his older (and therefore, better) music, ‘Just What IAm’ features King Chip, whom I strongly suspect is fellow Cleveland-ite, Chip Tha Ripper.

Capital Cities // Nothing Compares 2 U

The LA duo craftily covers Sinead O’Connor’s cover of Prince’s original song, turning it into an easily danceable hit. Personally, I dig the Capital Cities cover much more.

Ty Segall // The Hill

Ty Segall must never sleep. The newest single from his third album of 2012, Twins, includes female vocals laid over fuzzy guitars.

Azealia Banks // Succubi

Azealia Banks gets fiesty with this angry track aimed at Jim Jones. Produced by Araabmuzik, the track is rumored to be on her full length release, Broke With Expensive Taste. I’m on board with that album title alone.

Thee Oh Sees // Flood’s New Light

Nothing sounds better than a good tamborine, and Thee Oh Sees use it wisely on ‘Flood’s New Light’, off their upcoming album, Putrifiers II.

The xx // Chained

Romy Madley-Croft and Oliver Sim complement each other’s voices in their newest single off the upcoming Coexist.

Petite Noir // Till We Ghosts

A newcomer from Cape Town, South Africa, Petite Noir’s deep, throaty vocals have almost a jazzy quality.
